Timnath is reviewing portions of its municipal code related to electric bikes, scooters, golf carts, and other small wheeled devices. The goal is not to rush to decisions, but to modernize and clarify rules that have become confusing as new types of devices have emerged. Staff from multiple departments are evaluating updates focused on safety, clarity, and consistency across sidewalks, bikeways, and roadways.

What the Town Is Trying to Solve

• New transportation devices are not consistently addressed in the current code

• Residents and visitors are often unsure where different devices are allowed

• Existing language can be difficult to enforce consistently

• Timnath’s code needs to align with Colorado law and regional practices

What’s Being Reviewed

Staff is evaluating how bicycles, e-bikes, electric scooters, and similar small-wheeled devices are addressed in the code. A new section is being considered to clearly define where different devices may operate, including sidewalks, bike lanes or separated bikeways, roadways, and Town-owned parks or trails.

Micromobility Devices

Sidewalk provisions are being reviewed to reduce confusion and ensure coordination with the broader transportation network, including crosswalks, bikeways, and trails. The goal is to make sidewalk rules clear, consistent, and enforceable.

Sidewalk Rules

Proposed updates would clarify where golf carts are permitted and where they are prohibited, particularly around sidewalks, trails, and bicycle facilities. Council will also discuss whether to limit the review to technical code cleanup or further examine how golf carts are used in the community.

Golf Carts

No final decisions have been made.

This review does not mean devices are being banned, nor does it predetermine future restrictions. The current focus is on clarifying rules, improving safety, and ensuring the code reflects how people actually move through the community today.

What’s Not Happening
